Often, the suspect side of opinion, in any case, be it the cryptocurrency theft or otherwise, goes unnoticed. However, the mastermind of bitcoin heist in Iceland, Sindri Thor Stefansson, preferred to dish out his opinion to express his side of the case. In a note to the popular site, Frettabladid, he explained the reasons for leaving the prison and how he felt about his independence being threatened. It looked like an investigating movie story where the villain gets caught in the end.
Reaction to the Arrest
The mastermind behind the bitcoin theft, Stefansson, wrote that “I simply refuse to be in prison of my own free will, especially when the police threaten to arrest me without explanation. I’m not trying to say that it was the right decision to leave, I really regret it…I didn’t expect an international arrest warrant to be issued against me, as I was legally free to leave, and believed it was out of the question that I would be labeled a fugitive. I would never have done this if I didn’t believe I was a free man.”
The public letter of Stefansson is not a usual thing even as he was on the run. However, his attitude suggested that he could remain elusive as long as he can. In any case, the Amsterdam police have arrested him without any incident. Significantly, how he managed to enter the flight remains a mystery. That is because every country has the habit of stopping criminal at airport itself once the passport throws flags. Significantly, he could get even a boarding pass through in a different name.
On Sunday night, Amsterdam police had re-arrested the bitcoin heist suspect when he tried to escape. Incidentally, Iceland’s prime minister was also scheduled to board the same flight. Though he was arrested previously, he managed to escape from the prison, which the media believe was due to low security. The situation looked like a film hero or James Bond trying to catch the villain of the episode even as the prime minister was about to travel on the same flight.
He was implicated in a big crime wherein about $2 million in computer mining hardware is missing, news.bitcoin reported. About 600 computers were included in the heist. However, he is not the only person to have got involved. There are eleven others who have been charged in the same case. This included Stefansson’s wife and the security guard.
Crypto Miners Magnet
Iceland is termed as a crypto miner magnet by crypto community experts. That is primarily due to cheap electricity costs and its cold climes. This helps the infamously overheated instruments to cool even as the companies mine. The big bitcoin heist grabbed the attention in concurrence with four data center break-ins.
Despite the charges leveled against him, the bitcoin heist mastermind is not ready to leave the issue. He has already told the media that he would challenge his custody before the European Court’s Human Rights wing. However, there is also a call for a harsher sentence since he was re-arrested after his escape from jail.
